Gili Gede is a small and isolated island. Much of the island has electricity and people live from fishing and tourism. As in the rest of Lombok, people speak mainly Sasak, as their is only a few tourists coming on the island, it might be difficult to find locals speaking English. Gili Gede (translates to big Island), West Nusa Tenggara is located on the southwestern tip of Lombok in Sekotong, its southernmost tip approximately 550 meters off the port of Tembowong at the Lombok coast. Gili Meno Island is the second biggest in size and lies in between the island of Gili Air and Party Island. The atmosphere in Meno is quite mellow with a rich sense of appreciation for tourism, traditions and cultures of the natives. The islands and automobile-free and the serenity of limited modernity is quite splendid. They are characterized by small tents acting as hotels, restaurants and beach resorts. Trawangan has a faster pace of development as compared to Meno and Air. All in all, the Gili Islands are blessed with their own sense of charm and charisma. Accommodation varies, from back-packer one night rooms, chic boutique rooms and bungalows, hotels and villas. There are zero high rise hotels and zero tour buses as well.
Gili Trawangan is the most popular of the three islands. And therefore if one needs a perfect holiday, where you will swim in crystal clear waters, pool cocktails, seaside BBQ and so much more, Gili Trawangan is perfectly the best. This place has bungalows to stay in especially for those who need peaceful quiet places to stay in. The island is also referred to as a party island with the main streets full of shops, accommodations as well as restaurants. You will also realize that prices at the island always double in the peak seasons; July-August, December-January.

It experiences a tropical climate and the mercury hovers comfortably between 22°C and 29°C throughout the year. It is, however, a wonderful destination to visit any time during the year. The island is divided into four provinces – West Java, East Java, Central Java and Banten. Jakarta and Yogyakarta are special regions. The currency is Rupiah and the calling code is +62. Getting around in Java might be slightly stressful if you choose to travel by road, consider a scenic trip by train or book a flight. Garuda Indonesia, Batavia Air, Mandala Air, Lion Air and Adam Air offer good connectivity options. The major tourist spots are well served by these airlines.

If you try to find information or guide books about Lombok,9 times out of 10 you’ll find it grouped together as Bali/Lombok or Lombok/Gili Islands, almost as an after-thought. However, this does little justice to the pristine beaches and serenity that Lombok offers, unlike its Bali counterpart. Expect good local food, even friendlier locals and the touch of simplicity often missing from our daily urbanised lives. While it looks relatively close on the map, in reality,it takes about 4-5 hours to sail through the Straits. Lombok is about ¾ the size of Bali.
Best time to visit
The average temperature in Lombok is 29°C to 34°C, which in other words, means it is hot and humid year-round. Best time to visit is any month apart from the peak periods of June-July and December.
